SSB — Experience of a lifetime Aneet Kanwal Randhawa (The Tribune)

AN employment-seeking youth knocks all possible doors till he finally makes a cut. At times, the search for new vistas continues even beyond that. Yet all of you who have in this course had a chance to face a selection board for recruitment to defence forces would agree with me about how holistic the entire process is — a process, in which every aspect of your personality is uncovered with such finesse that any effort on your part to conceal it or portray it differently is made futile.

‘Late bloomer’ as I am often referred to by my friends, the only opportunity left for me to join the Army at my age was the
Indian Territorial Army entry which is a three-stage process. I was fortunate to reach the third stage, which was the selection board. I was allotted the selection centre east at Allahabad, where I arrived with all the gusto of a prospective Army officer, hopeful of making the cut.

I had no idea that my being a part of this four-day selection process would be such a value addition. Being a part of the Army fraternity for these days is an experience in itself. The largesse of the Army lies in the fact that every prospective officer is treated as good as an officer. You are offered a sumptuous meal and a comfortable lodging, something which is unthinkable in any other recruitment process.

A typical day with a selection board starts early. At 4.30 a.m. when you are in deep slumber, you are suddenly woken by the washer man’s call, asking for your laundry, in an astounding pitch to scare the hell out of you. You miss him and your evenings are ruined washing your laundry. You report for your breakfast at 5.30 a.m. in the dress code specified for the day. At 6 you report for the day's grilling sans your watch. When you are done with your day's tasks, to your utter surprise, it is barely 11 a.m. Quite a lesson in effective time management, I must say.

PPDT, SRT, WAT, PGT, IO etc. may be quite a familiar terminology for those who have faced a selection board at some point of their life. Yet, for the benefit of others I would like to state that these are various psychological testing techniques adopted by the selection boards. The dexterity with which the group task officers and psychologists check your perceptions, reactions to crisis situations, behaviour in groups and personality conflicts is amazing. The selection process reaches its summit with the interview, which is a virtual CT scan of your personality.

Yet the most memorable task which I executed was the individual obstacle task. And to add to the fun, it was held in the midst of torrential rain. 'Tiger leap' was the most interesting obstacle in which from a raised platform I had to take a leap akin to a tiger’s leap and cling on to a hanging rope and come down. Soon I found myself huffing and puffing and being unable to complete all the tasks in the specified time, yet having a sense of satisfaction over the fine display of perseverance.

In the final conference, when results are to be announced, you are counselled to be prepared for any eventuality. You are told that how great achievers like Amitabh Bachchan and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam came out unsuccessful from selection boards. Indeed, a great gesture.

You come out of the selection board as a transformed individual. You are able to appreciate the synergy of a group. You have a better sense of national integration. And finally, you have bonds to cherish for a lifetime. A must go for all, at least once, not for success or failure, but for the experience it offers.

#SSB Tips

PSYCHOLOGY TESTS IN SSB
Psychology tests are a battery of written projective tests.
Thematic Apperception Test [TAT]
Word Association Test [WAT]
Situation Reaction Test [SRT]
Self Description Test [SD]
What to do?

TAT
You will be shown 11 black & white pictures in which the last picture is a blank slide. Each picture will come just for 30 seconds and then disappear, after that you will get 4 minutes to write the story based on that picture. After 4 mins another picture will come for 30 seconds and same process will be followed till last slide {blank slide}. The tips for TAT are the same as for the story of PPDT. Go prepared with the story for the blank slide.

WAT
You will be shown 60 words back to back; each word will remain on the screen for 15secs. In 15secs you are required to write a sentence which comes to your mind first after reading that word. Likewise you have to write 60 sentences continuously without any pause in between.
Tips:
It is not possible to go prepared with 60 sentences, as some coached candidates try to do & in fact succeed in writing quite a few such sentences. This does not help, because only the spontaneous response is consistent with the personality of the candidate. The psychologist analyses the complete responses to construct a holistic & consistent personality of the individual. Any prepared response will be inconsistent with the complete battery of answers & hence will get ignored.

SRT
You will get a booklet with 60 situations written on it. You are required to write your responses based on those 60 situations. Time allotted will be 30 mins.
Tips: Answer spontaneously. The main character in the situations should be a leader, who should try to resolve the problems proactively for the betterment of everyone & not wait for things to happen.

SD
You are required to write opinion about you from your parents, friends, teachers & yourself, and things which you would like to develop in the future. Time allotted will be 15 mins.
Tips: You should go prepared. Write the truth. Opinions of others, as well as yourself about you are basically a brief about your strong & weak points. The strong points should be more than the weak points. In case the reverse is true, it shows that you have not taken enough action to improve yourself, despite being aware of your weaknesses.

OVERALL TIPS FOR PSYCHOLOGY TESTS
THINK FAST; WRITE FAST & LEGIBLY IN CORRECT SEQUENCE.
IT IS NOT MANDATORY TO COMPLETE EVERYTHING, BUT THE CANDIDATE WHO CAN COMPLETE EVERYTHING DEFINITELY THINKS FASTER & HAS BETTER MENTAL STAMINA THAN THE ONE WHO DOES NOT.

SSB Tips from my SSB Guru Major Pravin Sir...

WHAT WE SEEK IN OLQs(Officers Like Qulaities) IN SSB?

A common question troubling SSB aspirant candidates’ minds is as to what is being sought for in Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) in SSB? I will try to answer that in simple words. A candidate should be assessed as adequate in following qualities: REASONING & ORGANIZING ABILITY, SOCIABILITY, LEADERSHIP, WILL POWER & DETERMINATION. As to how assessment is done is an art which is best left to the expert assessors.

What we should understand is that an average candidate getting assessed should have in his/her career done the following:

A) Studied sincerely & understood what was taught well.

B) Played some games, and done some physical fitness exercises.

C) Been involved in organizing some events at home, or school/college & hence would have the ability to organize an event, if required.

D)Would have had some friends at school/college & good relations with family members. He/she would have been helpful in social relations & would respect & regard others.

E) Would have been involved in some leadership role like house captain, team captain, prefect, etc & developed abilities to positively influence a group & work effectively as a leader, as well as a subordinate.

F) Would have developed will power & determination through tough times faced at home & school/college like exams & other pressure/deadline oriented tasks.

G) Would have some hobbies & interests which would have aided personality growth in fields other than what is there in the school/college curriculum.

H) Would have a reasonable interest in knowing about important National & International events & social issues.
It would be apparent from the discussion that the above should be a very normal profile of a candidate. Such a candidate would be selectable. Nothing extra ordinary is required!
Unfortunately such simple qualities are difficult to get in a large number of candidates because of unnecessary focus on marks, time spent in tuition, which hampers all round development.

Success story shared by Inesh Choudhary who got Commissioned in 152 sikh Infantry (TA).

I had a word with Mr. Inesh Choudhary who got Commissioned in Indian Territorial Army.

I tried to find out about Inesh and his preparations, more importantly how he made it possible. Thanks to Him for giving us time and helping other aspirants by sharing his knowledge and experience form filing of Application to SSB.

"The journey from application to joining in TA has almost taken a year; however I must start with a comment that each stage of selection and each month has ensured that I stayed more focus to achieve what I wanted to from Day 1.

As we all know the first stage is to submit a duly filled in application form with NOC from current organization (if employed). I did that and submitted the form to Southern Command.

Stage I –
It has a written examination which is a mix of objective type questions and essay on most recent current topics. Through adequate research on internet, got to know that the question paper of TA. With adequate preparation written examination turned out to be a cake walk. I was quite confident that would clear and precisely the same happened when the results were announced.

Stage II –
I was called to appear before PIB. For me it was Southern Command. We were asked to fill up PIQ (Personal Information Questionnaire). The key here is to be honest with your credentials and outline responses very clearly on questions asked. It is around personal details hence all someone needs to know is their self-information. We then got our documents verified and submitted. We were then lined up for our personal interview with the board. I was called in and the board comprised of two senior officers along with a psychologist. The interview is mostly based on the PIQ that was filled earlier and questions were specific to current employment, purpose of joining TA, family and education background etc. As a part of advice, below aspects should always be kept in mind as questions will vary from each candidate; however ground rules are similar –

  • Always be crisply dressed. One should be in a dark colored trouser, light shirt and a tie (optional)
  • Walk in the room post seeking permission brimming with confidence and a pleasant smile
  • When asked to sit, do so and be attentive
  • Make eye contact while answering questions to the board member who is asking with precise answers without beating around the bush
  • Present facts and never try to manipulate answers
  • When asked to leave, thank the board and walk out in a crisp fashion
  • The interview will be about you so be thorough about what has been written in PIQ.
As a one-time activity, conducted by DIPR (Defence Institute of Psychological Research) we were asked to attempt two sets of question papers comprising of numerical ability, quantitative and qualitative aptitude. It appeared this was some kind of research; however like I said it was a one time activity and isn’t a normal practice. Once we were done with the time bound tests, we were asked to go. I was quite confident in my attempt so was expecting that results would be in my favor. As it turned out, I did make it to next round of selection.

     Stage III:

I would term this as one of the trickiest stage. A stage where in there are too many apprehensions, information on internet and too
many people with just too many suggestions. I am referring to much talked about SSB .Our batch was scheduled to appear before Southern Selection Center in Bangalore. Before I start with my experience and suggestions, would like to outline that SSB is an extremely scientific way of selecting officers out of all applicants hence we should be sure that no one can cheat/trick the system and clear. I followed very simple approach prior to attempting SSB –

1:Be physically fit. A healthy looking body without excess fat helps add to overall personality and to multiple outdoor assessments that one will go through.
2:Be aware of various tests that will be conducted in SSB. Watch official SSB video on website of Armed Forces and go through stages of testing to be aware and not be surprised when one actually face them.
3: Work on the approach towards a situation in life in a positive fashion. Make it a habit to think and act positively with friends, family, neighbour, colleagues etc.
4:Work on communication skills. It needs to be effective and crisp. Read current affairs weekly magazines, newspaper, communicate with friends/colleagues in English and be aware of what’s happening around in India and world.

I reached the selection centre and from noon were asked to fill up PIQ and multitude of other forms, got documents verified, got chest number and were assigned candidate’s lines for the stay during night as early next morning we were due to appear for our Stage-1 testing.

    Download:my SSB experience (PDF)

shortly after all done I received my joining orders to my unit (152 Sikh Infantry) (TA). I joined the unit on 20th July with best possible fitness levels. It is expected that morning jog of 5kms, pushups, chin ups and crunches are done. This is followed by drill and classes on weapon handling. Normally initial one month one is expected to stay in lines meant for troops so that we get to learn better, know them better and understand living conditions of troops.

I will keep updating on life in the unit once I get to experience. However I do want to state that preparing for SSB is a long drawn process. One has to think and behave like an officer and keep positive outlook towards life. Personality and communication plays a key role and it is important that work on this front starts early on. Good Luck…
